HPHS Social Justice Mural

For the past few months, Nancy and partner artist Eric Orner volunteered to be Artists in Residence at their alma mata Highland Park High School.  Nancy and Eric created this large-scale permanent indoor mural during Highland Park High School’s biannual festival, FOCUS on the Arts with help from HPHS students and Pochis Bank Studio Artists.

After meeting with HPHS students, faculty and parents to determine the most salient theme and content for the mural, the artists decided that the mural should be about social justice. Entitled “Giants Work Together to Create a More Just and Inclusive World,” the layout of the mural is based on a stained glass design by Frank Lloyd Wright, whose famous architecture is present throughout Highland Park.

The project was funded by a gift from the HPHS Class of 1968.  So many people helped to make this mural possible, but special thanks to the FOCUS Chairs and the helper artists, including (alphabetically) Tracee Badway, Ellen Bronska, Lori Bucciero,  Lydia Cash, Cindy Chudacoff, Brandin Hurley, Nancy Ellis Mills, Phoebe Orner, Shane Taylor, Jody Weinberg and Brittney Williams.  Visitors to the high school can see the mural adjacent to the H entrance, near the cafeteria.  A dedication ceremony will take place in the Fall.
