Horse of Honor

Over the past few weeks, Nancy has been transforming a life-size police horse as part of the Chicago public art exhibition, Horses of Honor. As with the two Great Chicago Fire Hydrants Nancy created last fall, the horse was sponsored by Golub and Company.

Entitled “Star-Crossed Sacrifice,” the horse commemorates one of Chicago’s fallen police officers, Eddie N. Jones Jr. who was shot in the line of duty. Nancy was moved by the star-crossed nature of Officer Jones’ sacrifice and chose to honor him with artwork suggesting Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night, swirling dream-like over our Chicago skyline. On the saddle are hand-lettered words taken from the mission and values of the Chicago Police Department. They describe the ideals for which Officer Jones made the ultimate sacrifice. The finished horse of honor is on display outside 625 N. Michigan Avenue through November. Thanks to the Studio’s summer intern, Grace Brandt, who helped with the initial concept.
